The first image of an angel a visitor to Hagia Sophia saw what a mosaic of the Archangel Michael in the vestibule. It commemorated a miracle of the archangel during the construction of the church. It has not survived. In its position at the entrance of the church from the Augusteon, which was the colonnaded public square on the southern side of the church.
